Fowey

The town of Fowey combines the narrow alleyed and higgledy-piggledy charm of a tiny fishing port with an astonishing number of the trappings of a larger destination.

Fowey is situated on the west bank of the River Fowey on the south coast of Cornwall between Looe and Mevagissey. Set in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, the Fowey estuary with its large, deepwater harbour is a magnet for the yachting crowd.

A vibrant maritime history comes to life as you walk down the narrowing streets of the old town where medieval and Georgian buildings cast shadows over each other. Fowey is also home to many small, independent shops mainly found on the main Fore Street.

The Fowey estuary has to be one of the most attractive and unspoilt parts of Britain’s south coast. The peaceful river is surrounded by miles of lovely open countryside, much of which is in the ownership of the National Trust.

In May, Fowey hosts Fowey Festival. The Festival is inspired by the famed author Daphne du Maurier, who spent a large part of her life in and around Fowey, where she took inspiration from her surroundings and created a rich literary legacy of titles set in the Cornish landscape. Also, the Fowey Royal Regatta Festival is a  must visit for anyone in Cornwall during the third week of August – visitors come from around the world to enjoy all there is to see and do. In 2017, the RAF Red Arrows attended the event.

Walking in Fowey

There are some great walks around Fowey, with dramatic stretches of the South West Coast Path weaving through woodlands and around creeks. There’s a quick walk around Covington woods, or if you’ve got more time then try Hall walk which takes you around both sides of the estuary. Or take in panoramic views from the Gribbin.

Beaches in Fowey

Readymoney Cove is a secluded sandy cove just outside of Fowey.  Provides safe swimming as the sheltered bay is a boat free area.  The estuary itself is popular with sailing and all kinds of other boats making the most of the scenic estuary.  There are tidal rock pools to explore and a bathing platform moored in the bay.
